Belgrade

Belgrade is one of the most beloved cities in former Yugoslavia. It’s a captivating blend of centuries-old history and new construction. The city has a distinctively different look in each season, making it an ideal destination for travelers looking to experience a different look at the region.

Belgrade’s old town is the city’s most celebrated sight. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and holds an international reputation for its architecture, culture and history. Many travelers go here to see the famous Kalemegdan Park and its grandiose monuments. However, visitors should also keep an eye out for historic churches such as St. Alexander Nevsky and St. Sava. These churches show off the city’s Eastern Orthodox tradition, which remains strong in the area despite decades of separation from the rest of Serbia.

One of the main draws of visiting Belgrade is the city’s culinary delights. The cuisine showcases the country’s southeastern European roots with a unique blend of influences from the city’s neighbors, especially those from Hungary and Turkey. Certain foods are uniquely Serbian, but many dishes originate from these neighboring countries as well. For example, Turkish kebab is a popular street food found throughout the city— it consists of grilled lamb or beef patties wrapped in bread and stuffed with local fillings such as tomatoes and onions. For a non-traditional meal, try some burek — a flaky pastry filled with fruits such as apples, raisins and nuts in addition to cheese or vanilla cream.

In addition to traditional food, many visitors find themselves drawn to outdoor activities in Belgrade’s parks and gardens. The city hosts many events year-round that draw in locals and tourists alike. These include the annual International Festival of Flowers— an event held in Zemun Park that boasts more than 1,000 different varieties of flowers representing over 60 countries worldwide. Another popular festival is the Belgrade Beer Festival, which occurs annually at Zemun’s City Park and brings together beer lovers from around the world.

Belgrade has something for everyone— its top historical sites, delicious food and interesting outdoor activities make it a rewarding place to visit. If you’re looking for a cultural experience, there are plenty of museums and galleries to explore in this historic city. If you’re looking for something to do besides sightseeing, check out one of Belgrade’s many festivals or outdoor activities like hiking or camping in Zemun’s park grounds or under the trees of Ada Ciganlija lake island.
